Rodrigo Garcia’s Mother And Child scooped the top prize at the 36th Deauville American Film Festival at the weekend.

The jury, headed by Emmanuelle Beart, chose the drama from a field of 12 films, including eight which premiered in the French seaside resort.

Mother And Child looks at how adoption affects the lives of three women.

Annette Bening plays Karen, who at 14 became pregnant and was forced to give the baby up for adoption.

Thirty-five years later her daughter Elizabeth, played by Australian actress Naomi Watts, is a successful lawyer who tries to trace her biological mother when she falls pregnant.

And Kerry Washington plays Lucy, who sees her dream of adopting a child finally come true.

We had an opportunity to speak with director Rodrigo García and members of his talented cast including, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson about the new film, it’s terrific cast, the adoption process in this country and what it means to be a parent.

A video clip of Kerry from “Mother and Child” has been released – you can watch it below!

“Mother and Child” opens in New York and Los Angeles on May 7th, 2010.

Mother and Child is a film about three women who all share a common core: they have all been profoundly affected by adoption. KAREN (Annette Bening) had a baby at 14, gave her up at birth, and has been haunted ever since by the daughter she never knew. ELIZABETH (Naomi Watts) grew up as an adopted child; she’s a bright and ambitious lawyer, but a flinty loner in her personal life. LUCY (Kerry Washington) is just embarking with her husband on the adoption odyssey, looking for a baby to become their own.
